I have been both a sailor and a photographer in past careers. I started in commercial photography in New Zealand and then London before spending many years traveling the world as paid crew on
yachts. I eventually returned home to New Zealand and to photography and combined the two into my current vocation as a Yachting photographer.
My first big break was winning the contract to be the photographer for the America’s Cup website in 1999 – 2000 at Auckland. This led on to many great opportunities, culminating in becoming Emirates Team New Zealand’s photographer in 2004.
I’ve worked for teams, events and associations, yacht owners, builders and brokers. I shoot for commercial clients and editorial/media outlets. I’m currently represented by seven photo agencies.
My photos have been in magazines, newspapers, posters, billboards, books and websites. They’ve been on stamps and busses, almost anything you could imagine and a few I couldn’t have imagined. One was rendered in shrimp on a giant Paella.
I believe one of my greatest strengths in the field is my ability to create an image that is technically perfect and aesthetically appealing at the same time as ticking all the boxes for the client. Great yacht photography requires planning, preparation and some cooperation from nature. There is no better feeling for me than when it all comes together and I get not only the shot I came for but also something unexpected.
I live in Auckland and I’m looking forward to covering my sixth America’s Cup here in 2021.
